With board games and plenty of Perler Beads, Session 3 Afterschool is the place to be! Afterschool provides a safe and happy place for students to engage in constructive activities and socialize with peers. This environment draws similarities to the Montessori classroom, and children have opportunities to pursue art projects, group games and stories according to their interests. A light, healthy snack is served and children play outside when weather and schedule allow.

Artists’ Workshop

Artists’ Workshop is a popular staple of after school activities and a lively environment for all manner of artistic expressions. Students use paint, fabric, feathers, wood and more to explore their inspired endeavors. Sue provides guidance and skill development, and the young artists lead the way.

Spanish Club 6-9
Mon | 3:30-4:30pm
Instructor: NNM Spanish Teacher Josefina Asconopé
Cost: $145
Games, songs, dialogue and crafts are a few of the ways Josefina will engage participants with the Spanish-speaking world. Language and culture are integral to this program. Students will have opportunities to practice and explore new interests.

Mindfulness & Movement
Mon | 3:30-4:30pm
Instructor: NNM Certified Intern Teacher Kate McCardell
Cost: $145
“Are we there yet?” Students will learn to appreciate the here and now in this engaging and enriching class. Kate will introduce mindfulness skills and practices that students can carry with them throughout the day. Learning and practicing mindfulness can help children with attention and emotional regulation, as well as foster empathy, kindness and generosity. The class will open with guided breathing meditation, followed by a lesson on a mindfulness concept and a mindful movement exercise.

Crack the Code: Computer Programming

What are Scratch, Tynker, and Hopscotch? Janeen will explore all three with your child as they take their first steps into programming. Creativity and problem solving come together for after school time that’s worth staying late for!

Introductory Ceramics

Under Sue’s guidance, children take exciting first steps towards developing interest and experience with ceramic clay. She’ll introduce students to a variety of handbuilding methods in an environment of low stress and high fun. New and returning students are welcome.

Hip Hop Funk
Grades 1 & 2

Participants learn to express themselves through hip hop choreography and dance improvisation in a high-energy fun environment. The skills that students build in addition to new moves – confidence, creativity, and composure – will benefit them off the dance floor too.

Chess
Tues | 3:30-4:30pm

Chess is a great way for students to learn patience, concentration and problem solving while having fun playing the world’s greatest game. Students will learn rules, tactics and strategy as well as sportsmanship and the art of friendly competition. Theo brings many years of experience teaching chess at NNM and to Chicagoland students of all ages. Beginners and returning chess players are welcome.

Alternative Art Adventures (NEW)

Trade in your paint brush for a potato masher, feathers or a tennis ball as we explore creativity in new and exciting ways. We will sculpt with recycled materials, paint with chemical reactions and much more. The possibilities are endless when you create outside of the box!

Creative Improv Games (NEW)

Tap into your spontaneity and let your imagination run wild! Beginning and returning students will develop a supportive, collaborative ensemble through drama and improv games. Together we will create characters, improvised scenes, and even entire stories through guided longform improv. In a comfortable, no-pressure environment, students will build confidence alongside physical and vocal skills. Be prepared to laugh… a lot!

WeDo Lego Robotics
Tues or Fri | 4:30-5:30pm
Instructor: NNM Educational Technology Director Janeen Cohen

In this popular course, students use Legos to build and program small robots. Janeen leads young programmers through building technological capacities in an environment of teamwork, collaboration and a whole lot of fun.

Instructional Swim 1 & 2
(both sessions run concurrently, with instructors targeting the skill level of each participant)

Instructor: NNM Aquatics Coordinator Shawnee Ardies-Morales
Cost: $209
Instructional Swim 1 is an introductory swim course emphasizing personal water safety and aquatic fundamentals. Skills covered include water entry/exit, bubbles, bobbing, opening eyes underwater, retrieving submerged objects, buoyancy on front (glide, recovery), buoyancy on back (float, glide, recovery), changing direction/position, treading, swimming on front/back (alternating and simultaneous arm/leg actions) and swimming with life jackets.

Instructional Swim 2 participants demonstrate mastery of aquatic fundamentals and continue to build new skills, with stronger emphasis on distance and time. Skills covered include entering by stepping or jumping from side, bobbing, submersion and retrieval of objects underwater, front float (tuck, jellyfish), back float, front/back glides, changing direction of travel while swimming on front or back, swimming on side, finning arm action, treading, combined arm and leg actions on front and back and swimming with life jackets. 3D Design and Printing

Create fun projects and 3D designs while learning exciting new STEM skills! Students in this class will learn about one of the most innovative technologies of our time – 3D Printing – and how to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to create, print and take home a series of awesome designs.

Taekwondo
Wed | 3:30-4:30pm or 4:30-5:30pm*
Instructor: Krasimir Rusev

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that combines self-defense and combat techniques with fitness for the mind and body. Master Rusev introduces students to basics of traditional and modern Taekwondo, including blocks, strikes, stances, self-defense and more. Self-confidence and fun are key with every class an active learning adventure. Originally from Bulgaria, Master Rusev brings years of experience working with after school programs and competitive athletes. Master Rusev was appointed on the USA Taekwondo National Team Coaching staff as Assistant Coach for the Junior and Cadet National Teams for 2016-2018. *Experienced participants should join the 3:30pm class, while students who have not taken Taekwondo before should join the 4:30pm class.

Dance Crew I

In this active and engaging class, collaboration and performance are key. Students have opportunities to learn and create short dance routines intended for performance. Dance Crew is a great way to get active in an upbeat and social environment while also building confidence, stamina and coordination.

Songs, Stories, and Crafts

Josefina is well known for bringing the joys of guitar and music into her classes, and the creative fun and learning will continue after school. Folklore and story creation are the central themes in this new activity. Students will have opportunities to write their own stories and songs, as well as present their folktales for one another.

Crossfit Fun & Games
Wed | 4:30-5:30pm
Instructor: NNM Athletics Instructor Jimmy Felton
Cost: $174
Join Jimmy for a fun, fitness-filled class! Students looking for an energizing and active way to spend time after school will love doing light upper and lower body workouts using materials in the Little Gym, as well as their own body weight. From jumping and lunging to high knees and resistance, students will learn how to have fun while exercising. After some hard work, each class will wrap up with a group game or sport.

Technology Explorers (NEW)

This is an opportunity for students to explore the area of technology that most interests them, including animation, coding, keyboarding, robotics gaming, design and more. So each class, students will have the opportunity to choose which area of technology they would like to explore.

Animation Station

Ever wonder how movies like “Frankenweenie,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Wallace & Gromit” are made? In this activity, students join Janeen to learn the art of stop-motion animation and will create, script, storyboard and animate characters to build a story, just like in the movies.

Potters’ Studio

In the ceramics studio, imagination is the only limit. Sue guides students in creating earthenware cups, masks, sculptures and other imagined designs that will last a lifetime.

Tap Dance I

Instructor: Former NNM Dance Instructor Amanda MacDonald

This session, in addition to learning all the basic tap steps, students will be working on tapping to the spoken word. Using poetry and song lyrics, we’ll explore all the sounds a tap shoe can make to tell a story. Open to stay-uppers through 3rd graders.

Ballet 6-9

Kate brings years of classroom and ballet instruction to the dance room. Students learn the basic building blocks of classical ballet technique including the five positions, simple barre exercises and ballet classroom etiquette. Students are encouraged to have fun and express themselves through movement. Beginners and returning students are welcome.

Fashion Design
Grades 1-6
Thurs | 4:30-5:30pm
Instructor: NNM Art Instructor Moriah Garrity
Cost: $174
Students will learn how to draw clothes, and design complete outfits including hats, shoes and other accessories. Students will use colored pencils, fine point markers and watercolor paint to create their own fashion portfolio.

Keyboarding Skills & Computing Basics

In these fast-paced times, mastery of the keyboard is as essential as mastery of the pencil. Children gain exposure and training to technology skills that will benefit them for a lifetime Using both laptops and iPads to enhance interaction with technology devices in an engaging environment with plenty of fun.

Water Polo Club

Join Shawnee for an introduction to water polo, a sport that builds upon fundamental swimming skills in an environment of friendly competition. Swimmers must be able to swim 20 yards freestyle and 20 yards backstroke; experience on the NNM Swim Team is not required. Water Polo Club is designed as a low-stress and high-fun recreational environment for swimmers who are interested in developing new skills while maintaining stamina and water skills. The Art of Puppetry (NEW)

In this class, students will learn how to give life to stories with the use of puppets, props and scenery. We will study the history of puppetry across cultures, with a focus on how puppet theater impacted societies. We will work together to write stories, create characters, build sets and practice puppet theater.

Sports of the World (NEW)

Sportsmanship, teamwork, strategy, and friendly competition are just some of the skills students will gain as they experience firsthand sports from around the world. Students will learn the rules and fundamentals of flag football, wiffleball, soccer, basketball, badminton, volleyball, floor hockey and team handball. Sports of the World is sure to be a great experience for children looking to be involved in sports without the commitment of a full season.
