With board games and plenty of Perler Beads, Session 3 Afterschool is the place to be! Afterschool provides a safe and happy place for students to engage in constructive activities and socialize with peers. This environment draws similarities to the Montessori classroom, and children have opportunities to pursue art projects, group games and stories to their interests. A light, healthy snack is served and children play outside when weather and schedule allow. 


MONDAY

Artists’ Workshop

Artists’ Workshop is a popular staple of after school activities and a lively environment for all manner of artistic expressions. Students use paint, fabric, feathers, wood and more to explore their inspired endeavors. Sue provides guidance and skill development, and the young artists lead the way.

Spanish Club 6-9
Mon | 3:30-4:30pm
Instructor: NNM Spanish Teacher Josefina Asconopé
Cost: $138
Games, songs, dialogue and crafts are a few of the ways Josefina will engage participants with the Spanish-speaking world. Language and culture are integral to this program. Students will have opportunities to practice and explore new interests.

Tap Dance
Mon and Thurs | 3:30-4:30pm
Instructor: former NNM Dance Instructor Amanda MacDonald
Cost: $138 (Mon) or $166 (Thur)
Savion Glover and Sammy Davis Jr. are in good company with NNM’s tappers! Amanda introduces students to the stamp and shuffle and towards deeper self confidence, coordination and performance skills. Students learn basic steps of one sound first and then build to steps of two and three. Beginners and returning students are welcome.

Crack the Code: Computer Programming
Mon | 4:30-5:30pm
Instructor: NNM Educational Technology Director Janeen Cohen

What are Scratch, Tynker and Hopscotch? Janeen will explore all three with your child as they take their first steps into programming. Creativity and problem solving come together for after school time that’s worth staying late for!

Friendship Group for Girls

Instructor: Therapist Leah Smethurst
Cost: $372
Friendship Group focuses on strengthening skills in the areas of social-emotional development, communication and conflict resolution. The goal is to provide a fun, activity-based forum where girls can discuss and negotiate concerns about friendships and relationships. Instructor Leah Smethurst is a licensed therapist formerly with The Family Institute at Northwestern University and has worked with children in schools and private practice for over 15 years.

Hip Hop Funk 6-9
Tues | 3:30-4:30pm
Instructor: NNM Dance Instructor Dana Christy
Cost: $166
Participants learn to express themselves through hip hop choreography and dance improvisation in a high-energy fun environment. The skills that students build in addition to new moves – confidence, creativity, and composure – will benefit them off the dance floor too.

Chess
Tues | 3:30-4:30pm
Instructor: Chess Instructor Theo Poulos
Cost: $179
Chess is a great way for students to learn patience, concentration and problem solving while having fun playing the world’s greatest game. Students will learn rules, tactics and strategy as well as sportsmanship and the art of friendly competition. Theo brings many years of experience teaching chess at NNM and to Chicagoland students of all ages. Beginners and returning chess players are welcome.

WeDo Lego Robotics
Tues or Fri | 4:30-5:30pm
Instructor: NNM Educational Technology Director Janeen Cohen
Cost: $179 (Tues) or $164 (Fri)
In this popular course, students use Legos to build and program small robots. Janeen leads young programmers through building technological capacities in an environment of teamwork, collaboration and a whole lot of fun.

Sports of the World
Tues | 4:30-5:30pm
Instructor: NNM PE Instructor Jimmy Felton
Cost: $166
Sportsmanship, teamwork, strategy, and friendly competition are just some of the skills students will gain as they experience firsthand sports from around the world. Students will learn the rules and fundamentals of flag football, wiffleball, soccer, basketball, badminton, volleyball, floor hockey and team handball. Sports of the World is sure to be a great experience for children looking to be involved in sports without the commitment of a full season.

Instructional Swim 1 & 2
(both sessions run concurrently, with instructors targeting the skill level of each participant)

Instructor: NNM Aquatics Coordinator Alex Bellisle

Instructional Swim 1 is an introductory swim course emphasizing personal water safety and aquatic fundamentals. Skills covered include water entry/exit, bubbles, bobbing, opening eyes underwater, retrieving submerged objects, buoyancy on front (glide, recovery), buoyancy on back (float, glide, recovery), changing direction/position, treading, swimming on front/back (alternating and simultaneous arm/leg actions) and swimming with life jackets.

Instructional Swim 2 participants demonstrate mastery of aquatic fundamentals and continue to build new skills, with stronger emphasis on distance and time. Skills covered include entering by stepping or jumping from side, bobbing, submersion and retrieval of objects underwater, front float (tuck, jellyfish), back float, front/back glides, changing direction of travel while swimming on front or back, swimming on side, finning arm action, treading, combined arm and leg actions on front and back and swimming with life jackets. 3D Design and Printing

Create fun projects and 3D designs while learning exciting new STEM skills! Students in this class will learn about one of the most innovative technologies of our time – 3D Printing – and how to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to create, print and take home a series of awesome designs.

Taekwondo
Wed | 3:30-4:30pm
Instructor: Krasimir Rusev

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that combines self-defense and combat techniques with fitness for the mind and body. Master Rusev introduces students to basics of traditional and modern Taekwondo, including blocks, strikes, stances, self-defense and more. Self-confidence and fun are key with every class an active learning adventure. Originally from Bulgaria, Master Rusev brings years of experience working with after school programs and competitive athletes. Master Rusev was appointed on the USA Taekwondo National Team Coaching staff as Assistant Coach for the Junior and Cadet National Teams for 2016-2018. Songs and Stories

Instructor: NNM Spanish Teacher Josefina Asconopé

Josefina is well known for bringing the joys of guitar and music into her classes, and the creative fun and learning will continue after school. Folklore and story creation are the central themes in this new activity. Students will have opportunities to write their own stories and songs, as well as present their folktales for one another.

Animation Station

Ever wonder how movies like “Frankenweenie,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Wallace & Gromit” are made? In this activity, students join Janeen to learn the art of stop-motion animation and will create, script, storyboard and animate characters to build a story, just like in the movies.

Potters’ Studio

In the ceramics studio, imagination is the only limit. Sue guides students in creating earthenware cups, masks, sculptures and other imagined designs that will last a lifetime.

Kate brings years of classroom and ballet instruction to the dance room. Students learn the basic building blocks of classical ballet technique including the five positions, simple barre exercises and ballet classroom etiquette. Keyboarding Skills & Computing Basics

In these fast-paced times, mastery of the keyboard is as essential as mastery of the pencil. Children gain exposure and training to technology skills that will benefit them for a lifetime Using both laptops and iPads to enhance interaction with technology devices in an engaging environment with plenty of fun.

Water Polo Club (NEW)

Grades 2-4
Instructor: NNM Aquatics staff Alex Bellisle and Longinos Flores
Cost: $198
Join Alex and Longinos for an introduction to water polo, a sport that builds upon fundamental swimming skills in an environment of friendly competition. Swimmers must be able to swim 20 yards freestyle and 20 yards backstroke; experience on the NNM Swim Team is not required. Water Polo Club is designed as a low-stress and high-fun recreational environment for swimmers who are interested in developing new skills while maintaining stamina and water skills. Introductory Ceramics

Under Sue’s guidance, children take exciting first steps towards developing interest and experience with ceramic clay. She’ll introduce students to a variety of handbuilding methods in an environment of low stress and high fun. New and returning students are welcome.

Instructional Swim 3 & 4

Fri | 4:30-5:30pm
Instructor: NNM Aquatics Coordinator Alex Bellisle
Cost: $182
Instructional Swim 3 participants develop their aquatic fundamentals into distinct strokes and skills. Skill objectives increase in distance and time, and children are required to be swimming independently in deep water. Skills covered include entries, bobbing while moving toward safety, back float, survival float, rotary breathing, changing from vertical to horizontal position on front and back, treading, front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, streamline position, and scissor and dolphin kicks. Participation requires approval of Alex Bellisle, Aquatics Coordinator. Contact abellisle@nnms.org with questions regarding your child’s swim level.

Instructional Swim 4 participants demonstrate mastery of previous levels. Students are introduced to butterfly, back crawl, breaststroke, and sidestroke, and survival and rescue skills are further developed. This class is a great alternative for children who may not be ready to join swim team. Skills covered include swimming underwater, feet first surface dive, survival swimming, front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, front crawl open turn, back crawl open turn, treading using two different kicks, reaching and throwing assists.
